What's the value of Rescue Diver certification?

Are you ready? Rewarding and fun – that best describes the Rescue Diver course. This course will expand your knowledge and experience level: Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves and consider the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is serious, it is an enjoyable way to build your confidence. With certification as a Rescue Diver, you are well on your way to earning the coveted Master Scuba Diver certification or professional Divemaster certification.

What will I learn?

Rescue Diver training will prepare you to prevent problems and, if necessary, manage dive emergencies. During the five open water sessions, you'll cover:

  • Self-rescue and diver stress

  • Identifying and preventing problems

  • AED and emergency oxygen delivery systems

  • Diver first aid

  • Swimming and non-swimming rescue techniques

  • Emergency management and equipment

  • Panicked diver response

  • Underwater problems

  • Missing diver procedures

  • Surfacing the unconscious diver

  • In-water rescue breathing

  • Egress (exits)

  • First aid procedures for pressure related accidents

  • Dive accident scenarios

What will I do and how long will it take?

Essentially the Rescue Diver course is broken down into three easy steps:

Step 1 - Independent Study: This is where you will learn the bulk of your rescue diving knowledge. With today's fast paced lifestyle, you can learn at your own pace and when time allows. Plan on spending about 5 - 6 hours developing your rescue diving knowledge using the Rescue Diver Manual and DVD. This can be done whenever and wherever is comfortable for you.

Step 2 - Knowledge Review with Instructor: One of our professional instructors will guide you through a review of the material you learned during independent study, answer your questions, and will ensure that you have learned the material. You will also jump in the pool to learn and practice various diver rescue techniques.

Classes meet two consecutive nights from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

Step 3 - Open Water Scenarios: With a professional instructor, you will complete two days of various scenarios in a lake or the ocean. That's it! You're a certified Rescue Diver! Keep reading to learn about your options for completing the open water scenarios.

What are my options for completing the open water scenarios?

There are three options for completing your rescue diver scenarios for certification. You may even complete the dives in different locations at different times.

Option 1 - Weekend Lake Dives: This is the most popular option because it allows you the opportunity to be certified before any planned vacation, and you won't have to deal with any training during your vacation. We conduct rescue open water scenarios on a regular basis (Saturday and Sunday) at Clear Springs Scuba Park in Terrell, Texas. The lake and facilities are dedicated to diver training, and with no boat traffic is very safe for divers.

Option 2 - Referral: People choose this option either for tight scheduling reasons, or because they absolutely do not want to dive in a lake. Once you complete the independent study and confined water portions of training with DTC, your instructor will issue you a referral certificate. This certificate validates that you have successfully completed these portions of training and are ready to do the rescue diver open water scenarios. You may then complete the dives anywhere in the world that you wish to go. We will be happy to assist you in finding a quality instructor at the destination of your choice. Or if you want, you can take your DTC instructor with you, but you'll have to pick-up the tab.

Option 3 - Combination: You may complete some scenarios at a local lake with Divers Training Center, and then complete your remaining dives where ever your travels might take you.
