Plano
Dive Center Offers Emergency Response Dive Training for
Police, Fire and Rescue Units
Recovery Team offers services to Law Enforcement and
Emergency Departments at No Cost
Divers Training Center, in
Plano Texas, is now offering training to individuals and
organizations that deal with extreme situations like
evidence recovery, search and recovery of drowning victims,
submerged vehicles. Situations that are not only extreme in
their cause but may involve diving in dangerous conditions
call for training well beyond “sport diving”.
The training, sanctioned by
ERDI (Emergency Response Diving International) is
specifically designed to provide competent safe dive teams
to communities that have a need for this type of expertise.
Communities that are close to, or adjacent to, large lakes
and rivers certainly fall in this category, although even
small ponds and creeks can be problematical to emergency
response personnel.
“We are really pleased to be
able to provide this training. While there aren’t a whole
lot of people looking for this training, the ones that need
it really need the best training they can get. What they do
in real life can be very hazardous, so this training is
crucial to their safety,” says Jeff Simpson, Training
Director at DTC.
An emergency response team,
as well as the actual training, is supervised and conducted
by R.P. Miller. He stated that “Our team has been called out
when other teams have drawn a blank in their searches, or
when a local agency feels they are not qualified to do the
task required and would like some additional expertise. We
work with local, state and federal agencies if requested and
can dive in water conditions that are very challenging; such
as black water and pollution.
Mr. Miller’s team, called
Elite Recovery Dive Team, is a volunteer team that offers
deep experience and expertise at no cost to the community.
“Many dive teams with police and fire departments are made
up of people that are sport divers and are willing to give
their time to try to help their community. While the
sentiment is honorable, generally these divers are really
not prepared to handle some of the dangerous situations that
arise from an accident or natural disaster.” Mr. Miller
stated.
Mr. Simpson said that
schedules for training are developed around the needs of the
individual or entity that is seeking training. “We know
these people have a lot of responsibility and time
commitments already, so we try to be flexible with our
schedules. ERDI training is in-depth and real world;
anything else runs the risk of producing an emergency
response diver, or team, that could wind up having a tragedy
of their own.”
